You’ve heard it everywhere: wear what’s trendy, be bold, dress however you like.
And that’s true. You can dress however you want, of course.
But then when you meet women from the social elite, something strange happens.
They all seem to know exactly what to wear. Different cities, different ages, same quiet polish. They never look like they’re trying, and they never look out of place.
Here’s the thing: it isn’t luck, and it isn’t a bigger budget. They follow a set of etiquette rules, often learned so early that they no longer think about it.

1: Keep Diamonds and Glitter for the Evening
You might want to wear your beautiful diamond necklace or big sparkly earrings every day, all the time. Don’t we all? And that’s understandable.
But here’s how to do it if you want to look elegant and refined: very glittery, sparkly jewelry is traditionally worn only in the evening.
During the day, the etiquette rule is to keep it minimal, simple and not too sparkly.
The traditional rule is that diamonds and high-sparkle jewelry come out after about 6 pm, or once the sun goes down. Anything formal and dressy, like a dinner, the theater, a gala or an evening wedding, counts as evening wear.
Some exceptions are generally accepted:
- Your engagement ring and wedding band are fine at any time of day.
- Small diamond studs or a very delicate pendant are fine for daytime, since they’re subtle and don’t catch the eye.
So save your stunning, dramatic pieces for the evening. That’s when they shine, and it’s also why they look so special when you finally wear them.
2: Don’t Wear Tight Clothing, Tailor It
You’ve probably heard that to look elegant and feminine, you should show your waist and wear clothes that highlight your curves. That’s true.
But! It doesn’t mean tight clothing.
Clothing is too tight when it sits so close to your body that we can see the lines of your underwear. That’s not what we’re going for when we want to look elegant.
What the rule really means is tailored clothing.
Tailored clothing follows your shape and leaves a little room between your body and the fabric. It’s a small investment, but the effect is mesmerizing.

3: Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White All Year Round
You’ve probably heard the old rule: only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor Day, from the end of May to the beginning of September.
And that’s understandable, because this old American rule was true for a long time. Back in the late 1800s, only wealthy people could afford seasonal wardrobes.
White summer clothes were linked to leisure and vacations, so wearing white was a quiet way of showing that you had money.
But here’s the thing: that’s not the case anymore.
Today it’s actually chic and very elegant to wear white or light colors in winter too. It makes you look polished and refined.
The trick is to choose winter fabrics. Cream, ivory and off-white in wool, cashmere or heavy knits look rich, not summery.
Picture a woman in a cream coat walking down a snowy street. Nobody thinks she got the season wrong.

4: Don’t Wear Too Many Logos
You see those rich influencers wearing outfits covered in big logos, and the brands are considered luxurious.
But if you want to look refined, elegant and like a woman from a higher social class, you should avoid big logos. They look tacky, and they actually cheapen your appearance.
It’s as if you were shouting to everyone: “I’m rich and I can afford it!”
Here’s the thing: if you really were rich, why would you need anyone’s approval? Why would you need to prove it? You’ve already proved it to yourself, and you’re happy inside your own bubble.
What truly elegant, educated people do is wear expensive, good-quality clothes where the quality speaks for itself, without the brand.
So if you want to buy an expensive bag or belt, choose one where the logo isn’t visible.

5: Avoid Trendy Clothing
When I was growing up, I would look through magazines or online to check what the new trend of the season was. Baggy jeans? Mom jeans? Crop tops?
But that’s not how elegant women of high society operate. They don’t follow trends.
They build a wardrobe that is classic and timeless, reflects their own style, and is not trendy at all.
Following trends isn’t very ecological either, because trends come and go, and you might not want to wear that piece next summer.
So keep it classic. Keep it your own unique style. Keep it high quality. And avoid overconsumption and trends.
6: It’s Better to Be a Little Overdressed Than Underdressed
You know the saying: you can never be overdressed or overeducated.
Some women are afraid to stand out, so they dress down.
But here’s the thing: if you want to be elegant and refined, the opposite is true.
Of course, you don’t need to stand out too much either. If the party is supposed to be casual and you arrive in an evening gown, that’s not good etiquette, because you’re ignoring the invitation’s guidelines.
What I mean is a little bit overdressed, one step above the dress code.
And it’s always better than being underdressed because of simple psychology. People who look polished and beautiful are also perceived as more competent, more successful, nicer and more likable.
We attribute good qualities to them without even noticing.
That’s why it’s always better to be a little overdressed than underdressed.
7: Avoid Over-Revealing Your Body
So many women wear very short dresses with a deep neckline, and they think it’s sexy. And it might be.
But unfortunately, it often sends the wrong signal. You want to look feminine and attractive, but you can end up looking cheap, and people may not take you as seriously.
So what should you do instead if you want to look elegant and refined? Pick one area to reveal, if you want to reveal anything.
If you wear a shorter dress, pair it with a high neckline or longer sleeves, like a turtleneck.
If you wear a neckline that shows your shoulders or chest, pair it with a longer skirt.
This will always look more refined, more respectful and more feminine than showing your body to everyone.
8: Keep Deep Cleavage for Special Occasions
So many women show their cleavage on a daily basis, all the time. I’m not talking about V-necks that sit on the top of your chest.
Those are fine, as long as they’re not too deep.
I’m talking about a neckline where we clearly see a lot of your breasts.
So is there ever a right time to wear one?
Most of the time, I would avoid it, for the reason above. And also, it’s simply cold. Aren’t you cold? I’m always cold in a deep neckline.
But there are two occasions where it works:
- A date with your partner or husband, for example at a very expensive restaurant, just the two of you. This is the time to be a little more flirtatious. Here the rule from before still applies: if you choose a deep neckline, don’t also wear a very short dress.
- A gala or a big formal event, where everyone wears evening dresses. A long dress with a deep neckline is acceptable there.
9: Choose a Subtle Slit, Preferably in the Back
Some skirts and dresses have a slit, and it’s there for a reason: it lets you walk more easily. That’s perfectly fine.
But you can also find skirts and dresses with a very deep slit, in the front or even in the back. That doesn’t mean you should wear them.
If you want to look elegant and refined, choose a modest slit, preferably in the back. That way, nothing goes wrong when you go down the stairs, sit down or bend over to pick something up.

10: Wear Stockings and Closed Shoes to Formal Events and the Office, Even in Summer
This rule gets broken so many times in summer, especially in Europe. And I understand: it’s hot, and you want to feel fresh and cool.
But if you want to look elegant and refined, the rule is to wear stockings to formal events, such as religious ceremonies, even in summer. The same applies in professional settings.
In my office in the summertime, I see so many women come in with bare legs and shoes that show their toes. Unfortunately, according to etiquette, that isn’t correct for office attire.
Pick stockings and closed shoes instead.
11: Don’t Carry Too Many Bags at Once
You’ve definitely seen this woman: she’s dressed beautifully, she looks great, and then she’s carrying five bags at the same time. A backpack, and on top of it a few other casual bags, some so overstuffed that you can see what’s inside.
I understand that life happens, and it’s not always possible to travel light.
But if we’re talking about etiquette, it’s better to pack neatly and carry only the bags you really need. Otherwise you risk looking disorganized, and honestly, not very elegant.

12: Put Your Sunglasses Away
Here’s another scene you see all the time in summer: women wearing their sunglasses on top of their heads when they walk into a building, or when they don’t need them anymore.
I used to think it looked cool, because it adds a little sparkle to your face and hair.
But later I found out that, according to etiquette, it’s not elegant.
So here’s the thing: if you’re not wearing your sunglasses on your face anymore, put them away in their case and keep them in your bag.
When you think about it, it actually makes sense. Etiquette is about following the rules, and sunglasses are made to protect your eyes from the sun.
They’re not jewelry or a hair accessory.
13: No More Dirty Shoes
I don’t know about you, but this is a rule I’ve heard from my mom for as long as I can remember: don’t wear dirty shoes. Clean your shoes. Keep them clean.
And now, after reading many books about etiquette, I understand why.
Here’s the thing: if you want to look elegant and refined, shoes are one of the most visible business cards you can have.
Clean, polished shoes show respect for your own belongings and for the people around you, and they signal the care and attention that people associate with high society.
